Marina and Des at Essential Spirit have been making ethical, award-winning, luxury soaps for 20 years, although founder Marina has been creating sumptuous aromatherapy oils since 1980. Marina has always felt a strong affinity with the natural world and believes in the healing power of nature. After training in various bodywork disciplines, Marina was inspired to create a range of all-natural products that are as kind to skin as they are to the environment – and Essential Spirit was born.
As Marina and Des are both practising Buddhists, they made the choice to relocate to the small village of Eskdalemuir in the Scottish countryside, a stone’s throw away from the Kagyu Samye Ling Tibetan Centre and Monastery. Samye Ling is the largest Buddhist centre in Europe and plays a central role in the lives of Marina and Des.
From their new home in Eskdalemuir, Essential Spirit continued to develop their exciting new ranges of product. Shortly afterwards, Marina’s husband Des joined the company, hand-crafting all of the soaps and wrapping them in colourful fair-trade, handmade paper. Together they have grown Essential Spirit into a business with an incredible reputation for quality and outstanding ethical credentials.
All of Essential Spirit’s products are handmade and are 100% natural, using only the finest ingredients. None of their products contain the palm oils, paraffins or synthetics found in most high street alternatives. None of their products have been tested on animals, most are vegan-friendly and all of the ingredients are traceable to source.
